For most rural UK homes with space outdoors, an external (outdoor) oil boiler is the simpler, cheaper installation. No flue to route through the house, no internal space required, and easier access for servicing. Internal boilers make more sense for properties with no suitable outdoor location, very exposed sites, or where aesthetics require it.
What's the difference?
The choice isn't really about the boiler itself. Modern oil boilers are available in both internal and external versions, and many models come in both variants. The question is where the unit is housed:
- Internal (indoor) oil boiler: installed inside the property, typically in a kitchen, utility room, garage, or purpose-built boiler room. Requires a flue pipe routed to the outside.
- External (outdoor) oil boiler: installed outside the property in a purpose-built weatherproof case or housing, or in an outbuilding. Connects to the internal heating system via flow and return pipes through the wall.
A third option. An external boiler in an outbuilding (shed, barn, garage separate from the house), combines elements of both and has its own considerations, covered below.

Why external boilers are increasingly popular
The shift towards external oil boilers has been significant over the past 15 years. Several factors drive this:
No flue routing is the biggest practical advantage. Internal boilers require a flue that must exit the building, typically through an external wall or up through the roof. Routing, sealing, and protecting that flue adds cost and complexity, and the penetration through the building fabric requires careful weatherproofing. External boilers exhaust directly to atmosphere with no flue required.
Kitchen and utility room space is increasingly valuable in modern homes. An external boiler frees up the cabinet or cupboard space the internal unit would have occupied.
Noise and vibration from an internal boiler can be noticeable, particularly in open-plan kitchens. An external unit produces the same noise entirely outside the building envelope.
Simpler installation in retrofit situations, particularly older properties where routing a flue through the building fabric would be disruptive or expensive.
When internal boilers make more sense
Despite the trend towards external units, there are genuine reasons to choose an internal boiler:
Exposed or very cold locations. External boilers fitted with a frost protection thermostat (standard on most models) cope well with normal UK winters, but in particularly exposed locations. Coastal sites subject to salt spray, elevated moorland positions, or north-facing walls in Scotland. The additional exposure can accelerate corrosion and reduce the unit's working life. An internal boiler in these locations will last longer.
No suitable external wall. External boilers need a clear external wall location meeting the same siting rules as oil tanks (separation from windows, doors, boundaries, and ignition sources). In a densely built property, finding a compliant external location may not be possible.
Listed buildings and conservation areas. An external boiler housing on the front or side elevation of a listed building or property in a conservation area may require listed building consent or planning permission. Internal installation avoids this.
Aesthetic preference. Some homeowners simply prefer no visible equipment on the exterior of the building. An internal boiler with a carefully routed flue terminal can be much less visually intrusive.
The outbuilding option
Installing an oil boiler in a separate outbuilding. A garage, barn, or purpose-built plant room. Is a popular choice for larger rural properties and farmhouses. It combines the noise and indoor-space benefits of an external installation with better weather protection than a wall-mounted external unit.
Key considerations for outbuilding installations:
- The outbuilding must meet the same fire separation and ventilation requirements as an internal boiler room
- Pipework connecting the outbuilding to the house must be properly buried, insulated, and protected: uninsulated underground pipes will lose significant heat in cold weather
- The distance from boiler to radiators affects system pressure and pump sizing: for runs over approximately 20 metres, a heating engineer should calculate the system design
- The oil tank can often be sited in or adjacent to the outbuilding, keeping all fuel infrastructure in one location
Planning and regulations for external boilers
External oil boiler housings/cabinets fall under permitted development for most domestic properties, subject to similar conditions as other permitted development extensions: not forward of the principal elevation, not in a National Park or AONB, and not exceeding height limits. This means most external boiler installations don't need planning permission.

Cost difference between external and internal installation
External boiler installations are often marginally cheaper. The saving on flue materials and installation (typically £300–£800) offsets the slight premium on an external-rated boiler unit. On a like-for-like basis, expect to pay roughly similar total costs, with external installations saving on flue but occasionally costing more if significant pipe insulation or underground routing is required.
The boiler units themselves are similarly priced. Expect to pay £1,200–£2,200 for the boiler, with total installed costs of £2,500–£4,500 depending on your location, system complexity, and whether a new tank is being installed at the same time.
